The most recent study on chocolate, funded in part by Mars, compared the death certificates of 1,250 Kuna Indians in the San Blas Islands just off Panama's coast.
The Panama Kunas that moved to Panama no longer consumed cocoa regularly, while the San Blas Kunas still on the islands drank four to five cups of cocoa water per day.
Aztec leader Montezuma introduced Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortez to the revered beverage,
Remember, the Kunas are drinking cocoa water combo made with unprocessed
cocoa. The more processing the less flavonal. The Aztecs were apparently adding in some capsican type peppers etc and making a
hot drink hotter. Capsican itself has great medicinal value and I have two books
on the subject. I would like to test capiscan affect on my diabetes but have had
my guinea pig body tied up in testing other things. Here is a direct quote about diabetes and chocolate from one of the articles on studies of chocolate. Researchers at the University Hospital in Zurich and Harvard Medical School also reported at the conference that similar increases in blood flow can be achieved among people with diabetes. This suggests that cocoa flavanols could aid in treatment of serious vascular complications associated with long-term diabetes. So now it is not just me saying this is great news for diabetics who up til now have been hearing little in the way of help directly affecting the 80% expected mortality rate from cardio vascular and strokes for those with diabetes. Also great news is that it is also affective in reducing cancer risks very significantly. Mars is out with some new candy bars that will be promoted as
"healthy" chocolate. Mars having developed a way to process chocolate
without the usual loss of flavonals. Hershey is reported to be taking similar
steps to cash in on this 15 years of research.
Look for others to jump on the promote chocolate as a health food band wagon, and you can bet they will still contain sugar or HFC (high fructose corn syrup) to pacify consumers sweet tooth cravings.
